The Voter Identification Card (Voter ID) also know as Electoral Photo ID Card (EPIC Card) is an important Identity document issued by the Election Commission to the citizens of India. It serves as an identity proof while casting votes in the country’s municipal, State and National elections.

The Voter ID Card also serves as a general identity, address, and age proof for other purposes such as buying Mobile phone SIM card or applying for the passport.

Having known about the many purposes of Voter ID card it is now clear that how important the document is for everyone. So if in case you have lost the Voter ID card you can get the duplicate one by following the procedure given below.

When can anyone apply for the Duplicate Voter ID Card?

If a person has lost the original ID card he can apply for the duplicate Voter ID Card. Given below are the situations in which you might need to apply for a new card.

  • In case if someone stole your Voter ID Card.
  • If you misplaced your card. It is normal to forget where you placed your voter ID Card, but it is important that you double check it before applying for the duplicate one.
  • If your card has become really old and you cant even use it anymore due to the wear and tear.
What to do when you learn that you have lost your Voter ID Card?

As soon as you realize that you have lost your Voter ID Card it is better to visit the nearest police station and file an FIR. The FIR has two uses, one, it saves you from further troubles or misuse of the card, two, the FIR copy is also required when you apply for the duplicate Voter ID Card.

Documents required to apply for the Duplicate Voter ID Card
  • Address Proof (Copy of residential certificate for proof of residence, Or you can also submit electricity bill/telephone bill/ gas bill)
  • Identity Proof (pan card/ration card/ passport)
  • Recent Passport size photographs
  • Form EPIC-002 (You can get the form from the electoral office or download it online, whichever way is convenient for you)
  • FIR report copy (make sure you have a copy of the FIR with yourself for future reference)
Procedure to apply for the Duplicate Voter ID Card (Offline Method)
  • Ge the Form EPIC-002 from any of your nearest electoral offices.
  • Fill up the form with correct details. Try to give all the details as they were present in the original Voter ID card.
  • Attach the above-said documents along with the form.
  • Submit the form to the Regional Chief Election Commission Office.
  • The authorities would provide you a receipt with a reference number once you submit the application form. Note down the reference number. This will come handy later on when you want to track the application status.
  • The Electoral officer will verify all your details and your application will go through only after the verification of details. And after the verification, they would notify you that your duplicate voter ID card is ready.
  • Finally, the duplicate Voter ID Card will be created and sent to your place through the post.
Procedure to apply for the Duplicate Voter ID Card (Online Method)
  • You can log on to the Cheif Electoral Officer’s website (ceokarnataka.kar.nic.in) to download the EPIC-002 Form. Click here to download
  • After downloading fill up the form with the correct details and along with the form attach the above-said documents.
  • Now submit the application in person to your nearest Electoral Office.
  • The authorities would provide you a receipt with a reference number once you submit the application form. Note down the reference number. This will come handy later on when you want to track the application status.
  • After successful verification, you will be notified and can go to the electoral office and collect your duplicate Voter ID card.
  • After the successful verification, the duplicate Voter ID Card will be created and sent to your place through the post.
How to vote in Karnataka Elections 2018 without a Voter ID?

Yes, it is possible to cast the vote even in the absence of Voter ID card. But with a condition that you have registered yourself as a voter with the Election Commission of India.

If you don’t have your Voter ID but have your name registered in the Electoral vote you can still vote by providing any one of the following Proof of Identity

  1. Passport
  2. Driving license
  3. Service Identity Cards with photographs issued to employees by Central, State Govt, Public Sector Undertakings, Public Limited Companies.
  4. Passbooks with Photograph issued by Bank or Post Office
  5. PAN card
  6. Aadhar card
  7. Smart Card issued by Registrar General of India(RGI) under National Population Register
  8. Pension order with the photo
  9. MNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act Job Card
  10. Health Insurance Smart Card issued under the scheme of Ministry of Labour
